Yutree’s Underwriting Manager, Garry Miles, tells us about where his insurance career started, Yutree’s affiliation with Aviva Marketplace, the quirky risks Yutree are asked to provide quotes for, and what he gets up to outside of work.
How long have you worked at Yutree?
I’ve worked at Yutree for almost two and a half years now.
Where did your insurance career start?
I started at a small insurance brokers in Surrey as the office junior learning personal lines – where everything was on paper and we had one computer for the whole office which simply calculated premiums for motor insurance quotes.
What does your job as Underwriting Manager involve on day to day basis?
As well as dealing with our panel of brokers for quotes and renewals, I will take referrals and questions from the rest of the team. I also deal with our binders and insurers regarding regular improvements, changes and audits.
What’s the most unusual risk you have ever placed?
In my time at Yutree I’ve put on cover the Camel Derby on Great Yarmouth pier for both their property and liability covers. We pride ourselves on being able to look at the ‘quirky and unconventional’ so there are plenty of risks on our books that don’t get considered by other insurers because they simply don’t match something on their trade list.
What do you see as the biggest opportunity for Yutree Underwriting this year?
We are firmly focused on growth this year across all product lines which are suitable for sole traders through to large multi-million pound operations. We are pleased that our Transport policy for hauliers, couriers, coach operators and taxi firms is now available to access via Aviva’s Marketplace website, which gives us the opportunity to not only grow this product line but also to develop relationships with many potential new brokers who may not have previously been aware of what we can offer.
With certain insurers pulling out of certain markets in the past 12 months, have you seen more brokers turning to Yutree?
Yes I have. It has certainly been a tricky 12 months in the industry with capacity for liability in particular reducing, especially for contracting and higher hazard trades. It’s also amazing how many risks we see which probably aren’t fully understood by the underwriters that they are currently placed with. I think there is always a place in the market for insurers who take the trouble to understand a risk, and offer good service at a competitive price. That is what we try to do here at Yutree, and for our brokers and clients who share the same values. I think that in such challenging times this is where you turn to someone who you can trust.
What do you like most about working at Yutree?
From an underwriting point of view, that the culture of understanding risks, and developing relationships with brokers through providing a good service matches my own personal values – but they are also all just a really nice bunch of people to work with!
How do you relax outside of work?
My 9 year old son takes up much of my time (not always relaxing!), but I particularly enjoy getting outside and love nothing more than a walk in the hills – which we don’t have many of round here unfortunately. I’m also leader at a local Beaver Scout Colony. In terms of sport I follow Arsenal, which always makes for interesting conversations sitting next to Tottenham fan Ross!
