Beware of this sophisticated camera theft scam targeting media production companies

The media production industry thrives on last-minute bookings, tight turnaround times and quick responses – which makes it a perfect target for increasingly sophisticated scams.

At Yutree, we want to keep our clients informed of risks like these so you can stay protected, both on and off set. A recent attempted scam aimed at a production team is a timely reminder of how convincing fraudsters can be, and how crucial it is to remain vigilant when taking on unfamiliar jobs.

How the scam worked

The fraudsters posed as representatives from a well-known international brand, using a real-sounding company email domain and a credible LinkedIn profile to initiate contact. They claimed to be producing an urgent interview film after their previous supplier had dropped out. Their requests were highly specific, including particular camera models, lenses, lighting setups and technical specs like frame rate and picture profile.

Over the course of a few days, they conducted multiple meetings with the production team, signed contracts, and arranged a shoot at a remote Airbnb property. The level of detail was impressive: floor marks for camera placement had been set up in advance, and the alleged client insisted on NDAs for all crew members, stating that the production involved a high-profile personality in the world of motorsport.

On the day of the shoot, the production crew were instructed to leave their equipment set up on-site while they went off-site to sign the NDAs. Fortunately, their producer sensed something was off and refused to leave the gear unattended. Moments later, the shoot was abruptly cancelled, phone numbers went dead, and emails stopped. A follow-up with the real company revealed that they had no knowledge of the project.

Why this matters

This type of scam is not only plausible, it’s becoming more common – particularly where high-value equipment like cameras, lenses and accessories are involved. Criminals are taking advantage of how fast-paced and informal parts of the industry can be, exploiting trust and professionalism to create a convincing story.

Theft claims involving camera equipment are unfortunately frequent, and can be incredibly disruptive – not just financially, but in terms of your ability to deliver for your clients.

Stay vigilant: Red flags to watch out for

While every production is different, here are a few signs that should raise suspicion:

  • Unusual payment terms – especially if they involve paying after the shoot but before delivery of footage.
  • Remote or private shoot locations – especially Airbnbs or venues with no official ties to the alleged client.
  • Last-minute bookings with complex demands – if the timeline is tight, double-check everything.
  • Non-disclosure agreements used to limit access – NDAs are common, but be cautious if they’re used to justify separating you from your kit.
  • Inconsistencies in communication – a real client will be happy to confirm their identity and discuss concerns.

What you can do

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Here are a few proactive steps you can take:

  • Verify the company and contacts independently – call the brand directly via their official website or switchboard.
  • Avoid leaving valuable equipment unattended – especially at unfamiliar or unsecured locations.
  • Speak to your insurance broker – make sure your cover is up to date and includes theft protection for kit on location, in transit and at rest.
  • Log and track all gear – and take photos of how it’s set up before leaving a location, even briefly.
